Our client purchased this site on Manchester Street, in the heart of Christchurch, with the goal of building six 3 bedroom townhouses, each designed for optimum calm and privacy with sheltered outdoor retreat spaces.

So many townhouses are crushed together in the city and yet the homes in this development have great, private outdoor spaces which allow the homes to expand out to make the most of the sun yet not feel overlooked or enclosed by the surrounding city. Having outdoor living on multiple aspects provides a greater feeling of space.

Not all sections are created equal and sometimes we need to be really creative to come up with the right result. Built in the heart of Christchurch City, these townhouses are on an exceptionally tight site which slopes down from the road. Our challenges included getting the stormwater out and using smart design choices such as white plastered walls to maximise the refracted light and make the development feel less intense and more traditional.

To increase the sense of space in each house, we utilised L shaped kitchens and made the maximised storage space with large, built-in cabinetry.

The overall result has been highly successful and unique within the city.
